Description

What is College for Kids (CFK)?

Each summer CFK “professors” teach courses for children grades 3-8 in math, science, technology, language arts (including foreign languages), social studies, STEM, art, music, health, nutrition, physical education, and even lifetime hobbies.

Daily Schedule

8:00-8:30 am Daily opening general session 8:30-10:15 am Session I – Class A
10:15-10:45 am Break – Snack and refreshment provided 10:45 am-12:30 pm Session II – Class B 12:30-1:15 pm Lunch (bring your own) – all students meet 1:15-3:00 pm Session III – Class C 3:00-4:00 pm Parents pick up children

Remember to bring your water bottle each day!

New This Year

Based on community feedback, this year’s CFK will be offered full days or half days to better accommodate working parents’ schedules. There will be three class sessions (90 minutes) each day. Children can choose to attend two or three classes daily.

Tuition

CFK students may enroll in full days (8 am-4 pm) for $200 OR half days (8:00 am-12:30 pm) for $150. Limited scholarships are available to those who have an economic hardship as set by state guidelines.

Commencement (Graduation Ceremony)

WSU President, Dr. Scott Olson, will be presiding over a commencement ceremony in East Hall on the final day 3-4 pm where each student will be given a certificate and get to shake his hand. Parents, grandparents, family members, etc. are all invited to participate, take pictures and view projects completed by the students. We will also recognize our teachers and volunteers!

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Fabulous Photo Fun!
Instructor: Andrea Church

Course Information:
Learn the basics of how to take a great digital photo! Practice taking photos of nature, buildings, objects, people and more. Learn how to edit your photos online and then make a stunning slideshow with music. Students will recieve a free print of their best photo to share with their family and free access to the Animoto Plus video slideshow website.

Instructor:
Andrea Church is a Winona State graduate and Special Education teacher at the Winona Senior High School. She has taught both science and photography classes for CFK in past years and has a special interest in using technology in education.

French for Fun
Instructor: Nancy Bachler

Course Information:
Students will learn how to speak French with a very convincing accent and the ability to speak in full sentences. They will also learn abou the culture, cuisine, geography and history of France and other Francophone countries.

Instructor:
Nancy Bachler was born and raised in Winona and spent 3 years in Paris with both Sarah Lawrence College and Middlebury College where she recived her B.A. and M.A. in French. She travels to France approximately every three years. She has taught French at the College of St.Teresa, Winona State University and St. Mary's University. She has over 25 years experience teaching College for Kids. Nancy and her husband enjoy serving 6-coruse French meals for silent auction fundraisers.

Future Chefs of America
Instructor: Rhonda Aspenson and Karen Whitney-Thrune

Course Information:
Future chefs of America here is your class. NO experience is needed! This class is all hands-on where you will be making and creating different items each day along with eating what you make. At the end of the week you will receive a copy of all the recipes you made so you can make the snacks for your friends and family. Come hungry and be ready to have some fun. See you with your apron on!

Instructor:
Karen Whitney-Thrune has worked as a Winona Senior High School counselor for the past 24 years
Rhonda Aspenson has worked as a Business Education teacher at Winona Senior High School for the past 24 years.
This will be Karen and Rhonda's 15th year of facilitating at College For Kids.

Indian Crafts-Native American Jewelry Making
Instructor: Patty Albrecht

Course Information:
Take a step back in time before electricity, and other technologies that we have come so accustom too. Native American Crafts is a creative art form developed by various tribes within North America and Canada. All connections with this craft form has a purpose with old world techniques and natural materials.

Instructor:
Parry Albrecht has a Bachler’s of Arts Degree from St. Mary’s University and is a Master Artist. She is a member of the River Arts Alliance and have taught art in various capacities for the last 20 years. Her career began as a graphic artist in a publication department for a local novelty manufacture in Winona. She studied Art History, Drawing and Graphic Design in Manchester England. Lastly, She was and still is involved in Family Art Day and The Blue Heron Project.

Learn to Fish and About Fish
Instructor: Todd Paddock

Course Information:
Join us to learn the basics of fishing and about the world fish live in, through fun, hands-on-activities. We will fish in a lake and a river, explore along their shores, look at the creatures living at the bottom of the water, and learn what's important from a fish's point of view. No license or equipment required, but you can bring your own equipment if you wish.

Instructor:
Todd Paddock is a Special Education Graudate Student at WSU, starting a second career after teaching college. He's been an avid angler since he was 5 years old, and fishes year-round in the Winona area. Todd has spent 20 years at a biological field station and is an active volunteer for the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which is headquartered in Winona.

Master Artist
Instructor: MaKyla Culpitt

Course Information:
Unleash your inner artist and become a master like Michealangelo, Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso and more! In this class, students will learn about famous artists and art movements throughout history and create their own works using the techniques of the masters.

Instructor:
MaKyla Culpitt is a Senior at Winona State University majoring in History, with minors in both Art History and War, Peace & Terrorism. For the past two years she has volunteered for College for Kids at Winona State and decided this year that she would like to teach. MarKyla has always had a passion for art and decided to turn it into a class for CFK with the hopes that art would influence the student's lives like it has influenced her life.

Microbe Mania
Instructor: Kay Pedretti

Course Information:
Microbe Mania is a biology class covering those "little bugs" you don't usually see. Molds, protists, viruses, bacteria, etc. are all around us. For the most part they are good. This class will "look" at these creatures under a microscope, "grow" microbes from our enivronment, and make cheese.

Instructor:
Kay Pedretti has been a teacher in CFK for many years. She works as a College Lab Specialist in the Biology Department at Winona State University. Kay enjoys keeping up with her kids, gardening, biking and taking naps in a hammock.

Outdoor Adventure
Instructor: Katie Frick and Emily Stangel

Course Information:
Come join us as we explore the Winona area by geocaching, hiking, or navigation, and paddling! Meet a great new group as we use teambuilding and facilitation activities to build a community and learn about our unique outdoor opportunities in Winona.

Instructor:
Katie Frick and Emily Stangel are students at Winona State University who both have double majors in Physical Education and Health Education with an emphasis in Developmental Adapted Physical Education. They both enjoy outddor recreation through camping, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and backpacking. Katie is certified in CPR/First Aid, Lifeguarding, and Wilderness First Aid as well as certified in Teaching Kayaking and Paddle Boarding through the American Canoe Assoication. Emily is a certified Wilderness First Responder, has CPR/First Aid, Lifeguarding, and Water Safety Instructor certification from the Red Cross as well as Teaching Kayaking and Paddle Boarding through the American Canoe Association.

Real Nourishing Food Cooking
Instructor: Aileen Abliss

Course Information:
Taste and learn how cooking grain-free, sugar-free, real nourishing food gives you energy and promotes health. Receive a fun cookbook with delicious recipes. Almond flour will be used for baking. Come hungry!

Instructor:
Aileen Abliss, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Certified GAPS Practitioner, teaches individuals and groups how to heal with real nourishing food. Aileen and her six children overcame autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia of speech, OCD, ADD, anxiety, asthma, skin conditions, and hypoglycemia with dietary intervention. Her lively presentations and stories are delightful.

Seashells
Instructor: Lori Ortega

Course Information:
Have you ever wondered how a seashell lives? Did you know that there is only one left-handed shell in the world? How is Winona connected directly to the most beautiful shell species in the world? Do you love the beach?

Instructor:
Lori Ortega has been working and volunteering in educational areas for over 20 years in many capacities including coordinating educational lyceums, working with local, state and national PTA, teaching in summer programs, student supervision, coaching and volunteering for area schools. She has a great interest in nature and has had a lifelong love for the ocean and shell collecting and previously lived on the Gulf Coast and the West Coast where her collections grew extensively.

Lori Ortega has a B.S. from the University of Iowa and has a B.S and Masters Degree from Winona State University. She lives in Winona with her husband, two children and a yellow lab. This is her seventh year teaching for College for Kids.

Solving Mysteries with Chemistry
Instructor: Jennifer Zemke

Course Information:
Chemistry can help solve a lot of problems in the world. In this course we use chemistry to solve a mock crime.

Instructor:
Dr. Jennifer Zemke has been doing chemistry for quite some time. She received her B.S. in Chemistry from Winona State University and her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. Dr. Zemke believes that chemists truly have the power to change the world for good.

Stat Attack
Instructor: Lee Windsperger

Course Information:
Much of our understanding of the world around us is based on data driven evidence and our intuition. Sometimes our intuition can accurately predict reality and sometimes it falls short. In this course, we will take an in-depth look at how mathematical thinking and statistical tools can help us measure uncertainty and make sense of the world around us.

Instructor:
Dr. Lee Windsperger is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Winona State University. He completed his Ph.D. in mathematics in August of 2012 at Louisiana State University. He has a history of mathematical outreach in elementary, middle, and secondary schools.

STEM DIY Projects
Instructor: Bill Kuhl

Course Information:
Students will build model airplanes, syringe hydraulic arm, mousetrap car, and more if time permits. In addition to the fun of building, students will learn basic physics.

Instructor:
Bill Kuhl has taught a project building class for College for Kids and through other programs for several years. These projects are presented as construction articles on a website that he maintains that receives hundreds of views daily. His fulltime work is in information technology.

The Amazing World of Reptiles and Amphibians
Instructor: Tom Pederson

Course Information:
Students in this class will have the opportunity to see and touch live reptiles and amphibians. The students will learn why they are such interesting creatures. They will also see if a reptitle is the type of pet they would like to have.

Instructor:
Tom Pederson is a recently retired fifth grade teacher from Lake City, Minnesota. He has been interested in animals his entire life and has had reptiles and amphibians in his classroom. He is affectionately known as the "Creature Teacher". He enjoys the outdoors. In his spare time he likes to bike, hike and fish.

The Art of Mandala Making!
Instructor: Patty Albrecht

Course Information:
Mandala means: a schmeatic represnetation of the cosmos; chiefly made in the round with geometric shapes represented. The Tibetan monks focused on the mandala as a form of prayer and meditation. We will be make Mandala's out of recycled vinyl records, old CD's, and/or canvas & sand.

The Next Sherlock Holmes – Exploring the Secret Codes
Instructor: Pingping Zhang

Course Information:
Do you want to talk to your firends in a way that no one else understands? Or do you want to read some private messages written in secret codes? Become the next Sherlock Holmes by mastering the art of secure communication.

Instructor:
Pingping Zhang is a secondary mathematics educator at Winona State University. She has been working with secondary students (6th through 12th) in the U.S. for 7 years. Pingping's research interest lies in children’s cognitive and metacognitive processes when they are solving mathematical problems. Her aim to promote students’ mathematical thinking ability and their interests towards mathematics.

Water Bottle Rockets: Exploring Force through Engineering and Design
Instructor: Meghan Booth

Course Information:
Students will learn about what makes airplanes fly then design and launch their own water bottle rocket to explore the forces that are at work (gravity, air resistance, etc.). Students will need to provide their own soda bottle. Any size will work (20 oz 2L). Straight sided bottles work best.

Instructor:
Meghan Booth is currently a math teacher at Bluffview Montessori. She has previously taught science at the middle school level in Oregon before moving to Minnesota.

Zentangles!
Instructor: Kris Brown

Course Information:
The Zentangle® method is a fun and relaxing way to create awesome art using easy-to-learn steps. In this class you’ll learn to create several structured patterns, complete multiple 3.5 inch black and white pattern drawings, and combine your drawings into a larger scale work of art. You can choose to leave your art black and white, or color your drawings with watercolors, markers, and colored pencils.

Instructor:
Kris Brown's teaching is based in her passion for art-making as way for kids to express, understand, and appreciate themselves. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Counseling at Winona State University and has worked as a professional artist for twenty years. Kris holds degrees in Human Development with emphasis in Creativity & Spirituality (MA), Studio Arts (BFA), and Advertising Design (AA). She has taught personal development, painting, and creativity classes through Winona State University, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, and Community Education programs. Kris’ exhibition history includes shows at several Minneapolis galleries and the Pump House Regional Arts Center in La Crosse, WI. Her art works are held in private collections throughout the U.S. and Canada.
